Founded in 1988 at its current Brentwood, CA location, Pacific Coast Sports Medicine has been the lifelong vision of Co-Founder and Clinic Director Dr. Michael Sheps. As an eight-year-old baseball player, Dr. Sheps received weekly chiropractic adjustments for various sports-related injuries: each Saturday after these adjustments, he would hit a home run. He immediately made the connection between his increased athletic performance and chiropractic therapy. Applying a laser-like focus to his desire to help others, Dr. Sheps made it his life’s mission to become a chiropractor. In 1986, after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Bloomfield College of New Jersey, he completed his chiropractic training and moved to Los Angeles. Always staying ahead of the curve, Michael Sheps soaked up as much knowledge as he could about chiropractic. During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Sheps worked for the school, allowing him to take post-graduate classes while earning his degree. After studying under the direction of Dr. Raymond Nimmo (a pioneer of soft tissue and chiropractic trigger point therapy), Dr. Sheps became certified in the Logan Basic and Thompson Techniques, and then trained in the Palmer Method. Able to offer such a comprehensive package of therapies to his new patients, his practice grew quickly and exponentially. In 1993, PCSM expanded its practice to create a multi-disciplinary approach to therapy. They added top physicians, a physical therapist, an acupuncturist, athletic trainers, and additional chiropractors: each professionally renowned in their field with decades of experience. PCSM soon became a trusted one-stop shop for a full range of healthcare needs.
The key to Dr. Michael Sheps’ success derives not just from innovative technology, but equally important, an open mind to alternative practices and techniques. In 1994, Dr. Sheps became a certified therapist in Vertebral Axial Decompression (VAX-D), and the facility at PCSM donned the first VAX-D on the West Coast. Minutes after appearing on NBC’s “Bruce Hensel Medical” show, PCSM’s phone lines were flooded with countless inquiries about VAX-D. Treating over 7,500 patients, Dr. Sheps is one of the leading experts on VAX-D. Additionally, he has assisted in the research and development of algorithms for the protocol on patient screening and treatment. Dr. Allan Dyer, President of VAX-D Medical Technologies recognizes Dr. Sheps’ training, touting that it “creates unique insight into many of the difficult disc and joint cases” as well as “offers his patients safe and effective alternatives to drugs and surgery”.
Dr. Michael Sheps is credentialed in the McKenzie Method, which explores possibilities of developing self-care strategies in order to reduce, eliminate, and prevent back and neck symptoms. He believes in co-managing patients with physicians and integrating the latest in medical technology. Always a continual learner, Dr. Sheps completed a post doctorate certificate in chiropractic orthopedics and chiropractic rehabilitation from the Los Angeles Chiropractic College, and in 1995 was certified in both cervical and lumbar MedX from the University of California, San Diego.
As a faculty member (1998–2002) at The University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, Dr. Sheps taught in the Family Medicine department. During this time, he had the unique opportunity to instruct 3rd and 4th year medical students in the use of his algorithm, educating them on how to recognize the difference between mechanical and organic back pain. Additionally, Dr. Sheps developed a complimentary medical elective for both students and residents at the University. Trusting in his unparalleled expertise, UCLA’s Chief of Staff, Assistant Chief of Staff, and Chair of Pain Management routinely refer their patients who need chiropractic care to Dr. Sheps.
Dr. Michael Sheps is also a pioneer in the use of lasers for chiropractic medicine. After five years of clinical laser experience with earlier generation lasers, Dr. Sheps worked closely with the R & D team of BIOLASE Technology, a world leader in lasers for dentistry and medicine, to develop a new laser and delivery system designed specifically for chiropractic, orthopedic, physical therapy, sports medicine and pain center markets. This laser, the Diolase 10™, combines a unique wavelength, 940 nm and high power to provide optimal tissue penetration and enhanced biostimulatory effects, resulting in more effective treatment of acute and chronic pain in his patients. He is recognized as a leader in the field, and now lectures internationally and provides clinical education for doctors interested in this fast growing field. His amazing clinical success stories include Olympic athletes who needed to heal quickly and return to competition, celebrities, global business leaders, and geriatrics who had virtually given up on finding relief from their pain and related conditions. Word-of-mouth referrals from these patients have contributed to the rapid growth of the practice and Dr. Sheps’ reputation as the “Go To” doctor in the LA area.
Despite a potential career as a runner, Dr. Sheps chose to harness his passion for performance and follow his chiropractic path, rather than athletics. He now sees himself as the pit crew for a myriad of world-class athletes such as Mattie Larson, Carmelita Jeter, Dominique Arnold, Leroy Dixon, and John Steffenson. Professional athletes have trusted Dr. Sheps expertise during their most critical training and performance periods, such as Olympic trials. Prior to the 2004 Olympics, PCSM served as the medical and training facility for the British Olympic team. At the 2008 Olympic games, Dr. Sheps served as primary chiropractor for over 100 Athletes from North and South America, Jamaica and Britain; administering chiropractic care, laser therapy and injury treatment.
Dr. Sheps believes in treating each patient with a results-focused approach. In June 2010, PCSM expanded their facilities to introduce PCSM Training & Rehab: the safest, most efficient, and effective way to strengthen the body. In only 30 minutes, once a week, patients feel pain relief and see physical improvement.
In addition to traditional chiropractic care, PCSM now houses three unique devices used to diagnose, treat, and maintain proper health: VAX-D, Diolase 10™ Laser Therapy and PCSM Training & Rehab.
Dr. Michael Sheps is a member of the California Chiropractic Association and was Vice President of the Santa Monica Society. He is also a member of the McKenzie Institute and the VAX-D Association.
